 Permitted and Prohibited Activities

As a Standard Visitor, you can:

- Visit for tourism, such as a holiday

- Visit family or friends

- Volunteer for up to 30 days with a registered charity

- Pass through the UK en route to another destination ('in transit')

- Engage in certain business activities, like attending meetings or interviews

- Participate in a school exchange program

- Take a short recreational course (up to 30 days), such as a dance class

- Study, complete a placement, or take an exam

- Work as an academic, senior doctor, or dentist

- Seek medical treatment

You cannot:

- Engage in paid or unpaid work for a UK company or be self-employed

- Claim public funds (benefits)

- Reside in the UK for prolonged periods through frequent or successive visits

- Marry or register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership (a Marriage Visitor visa is required for these purposes)
