What is an LMIA?

An LMIA is a document that demonstrates a Canadian employer's effort to hire locally for a job position but without success, allowing them to hire a foreign employee.

There are various work permit streams and programs under the IMP, offering opportunities for eventual application for permanent residency through provincial programs or federal economic programs like the Canadian Experience Class under the Express Entry system.

What Is the International Mobility Program (IMP)?

The International Mobility Program (IMP) permits Canadian employers to hire foreign workers without an LMIA if the job benefits Canada's cultural and economic interests. This results in faster processing and a simpler application process compared to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, which requires an LMIA and is dependent on the labor market.

How Do I Apply Through the IMP?

Step 1: Job Offer

Your potential employer must submit an official job offer in Canada through the Employer Portal.

Step 2: Apply for Work Permit

Once this is done, you can apply for your temporary foreign work permit. You will need your employer's job offer number to complete your application. If eligible, your application will be approved, and you will receive either a letter of introduction and a work permit from a Canada Border Services Officer or a new work permit (if you are already in Canada or applying upon entry).

Step 3: Prepare for Your New Job in Canada

Once you have your work permit and travel visa, you can prepare to begin your new job in Canada.
